INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATION FOR THE CANDIDATE TOSA INU BUYERS.

INTRODUCTION:
This information has been composed by the Dutch Tosa Inu Club for you to be helpful at selecting good and healthy Tosa Inu. The Tosa Inu have been bred initially to serve as fight and guarddog. For this reason this dog is not the type of dog for everyone.
The particular character makes high demands to the owner, one must have not only the financial resources, but also over a considerable free time and perseverance.
Never forget u buy a dog for a time +/- 10 years.
This breed is strongly attached himself to its boss to replace its family is not easily done.
It is very advisable to read the information mentioned below very well and not impulsive to the purchase a Tosa Inu.

IMPORTANT:
The actual purchase is a matter between you and the breeder of your choice
The Tosa Inu Club can only give you advice in this !!
It’s advisable to visit several breeders at there homes and if possibly to visit some shows before to will you make a definite choice.

IS TOSA INU THE TYPE OF DOG FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?
• What is your expectations with the Tosa Inu?
• What do you have to offer Tosa Inu?
• What type of house you have?
Do you have sufficient space and movement freedom in your house for this large breed?
Also it’s advisable for Tosa Inu the first 1 ½ year not to let him walk stairs concerning the grow of the bones.
Apartments with stairs isn’t a good idea, it’s only possible to carry a Tosa Inu for a very short time, their weight does not allow this long for a long time

• The Tosa Inu need rather much movement, can you these him/its offer?
• Do you have experience with dogs?
• Tosa Inu demand some experience with dogs.
• Is there regularly someone at home?
If you can’t be home on fixed times, the trainings to teach the dog to "stay home alone" can be an important factor which must be taken along in your decision.
With a young dog there is a lot of time needed to train him/her the behaviour you want.
Thereby thinking of the fact that young Tosa will not go this way economical with your things if you would want.
Also a needs Tosa the necessary attention, or he/she will feel themselves rapidly solitary.
You have a quiet place where the Tosa can be on his own? Think of a bench for example.
• How much time can u spend on you’re Tosa Inu?
A adult Tosa Inu needs a walk atleast 3 times a day.The Tosa Inu is NOT impressed by a small walk so take your time for this for atleast 45 min to one hour.
• Do you and your family have enough time to give the dog enough attention?
It is important thereby to make clear rules concerning what, however, and can’t especially with a view to the order in the family. Also it’s not advisable to let children walk a Tosa Inu, this demands justification, knowledge and if necessary also strength.
As with all breeds there is a golden rule: Always stay alert with children and dogs together NEVER leave your children alone with dogs !!!!
• Do you have the sufficiently natural preponderance to boss a Tosa Inu ?
Tosa Inu can be fairly dominant, especially the males. Think of that when u choose a male or female.
• What kind of dog you are looking for?
Do you want a pet dog, a sportdog, a showdog, or just a dog to breed with.
A good preparation has been wished certainly the correct choice you have to make.
• Did u think of all the costs a Tosa Inu will bring or can bring with itselfs?

Make a budget overview before you start with a Tosa Inu.
To the purchase a Tosa Inu aint nothing at the costs of a lifelong care.
They are possible considerably much food and then we didn’t have yet concerning the possible veterinary surgeon costs that a Tosa Inu can bring you in the futore Medecines generally go by body weight (per kg).
These are things where certainly consider before we start with a Tosa Inu!

• What happens with you’re Tosa Inu at vacations?

Tosa Inu are not allowed in every country, they all have there own set of rules.
A Tosa isn’t allowed in every pension or hotel.
When a pension, however, Tosa Inu accept, ensure you then that you obtain sufficient information before you your dog there behind late
(experience with Molossers, do they have sufficient preponderance and the responsibility, where the dogs stay there, etc.).

• Do you have a preference for a male or female?

This is purely an individual choice.
The male is larger and more powerful than the female and thereby also frequently the more beautiful representant of the breed.
There are rather some differences between a male and a female.

• Disadvantages of the male:
  • Dominantly especially with respect to other dogs.

  • Will rather defy the boss for leadership.

  • Strong and powerfull, only strength demands will keep him under control.

  • Sensitively for females in heath in the area. The impact of this behaviour (be possible) to be:

Lack of appetite, want more often to go out, more short pee moments, expressly present (to bark, whines).

• Advantages of the reu:

  • More affectionately compared with boss and family.

  • Show more impressive.

• Disadvantages of the female:
  • In heath (2 times a year).

  • Risks to a phantom pregnancy

  • Risks to an unwanted pregnancy.

  • Less affectionately compared to boss and family.

• Advantages of the female:
  • More easy in behaviour

  • Frequently more social with respect to other dogs.

  • Obey improves frequently.

Of course the above doesn't apply to every Tosa Inu, there are always exceptions on the rule.

THE SEARCH FOR A SUITABLE PUP.
Search to a suitable and for you appropriate pup does not go of the one on the other day
One thing u must have is patience.
Each pup is sweet and and adoring, dont let this you seduce to impulsive purchase.
Go to several breeders so that you can compare your obtained information this way u can reach a good and well-considered choice.

WHAT IS A GOOD BREEDER:
This question is asked many times, for this reason here a short explanation follows.

You hear People frequently say that their pup comes of a good breeder.
That is great of course.
But to you is a good breeder if you breed puppy's with pedigree and you vaccinate the puppy's and give shorts for worms?
A pedigree is nothing more than one filiation proof and means that if these have been delivered by the Council of management (FCI) it concerns a race dog.
But a race dog is no guarantee for a HEALTHY dog.
On a pedigree can you retrieve data or retrieve with relation on health, but then the parent animals must cheaked on of cours.
You can think of HD, OCD and LPC.
Date of Birth, the NHSB number (in holland), name of the breeder, and name of the owner are some things which to retrieve be on a pedigree.
One must consider a pedigree as a passport of the dog.
Look well in the vaccination notebook of the pup, this mention all medical data.

Thanks for the compliment Webmaster! Yes, I'm an artist and have created 17 children's books, of which this is the most recent, for ages 3 - 6. It is the ONLY book about a Shiba that I have been able to find! Hope other members will have a look.
